What to Learn from Introverts' Networking Superpowers

One of the most common arguments when it comes to networking is that introverts struggle more than extroverts.  This is not only false, but introverts have many qualities that actually make them more strategic networkers than extroverts

While introverts have to work harder to break out of their shells, they have a few tricks up their sleeves too.

Here are three advantages introverts have when it comes to networking.


  1. It's easy for extroverts to talk. But it's easy for introverts to listen. Don't forget that listening is half of the conversation.

    People not only appreciate a good listener, but will listen to one more attentively if they know they've already been heard. Hearing what people have to say shows that you're good at collaborating with others and a team player. It also show's that you're attentive.

  2. Think before you speak. While extroverts naturally voice their thoughts while they're having them, introverts have to make a conscious decision to say something.

    So it's less likely that an introvert will say something silly so long as he or she keeps a cool head. This means that introverts are better at speaking wisely.

    Introverts speak less, but whenever an introvert speaks, you can be sure that it's a well-formulated response. Networking isn't about how much you say but what you say. Quality trumps quantity.

    I always think about my family's dynamics.  My mom and I always do most the talking and seldom when Dad talks, the room listens harder, and ponders what he said later.

  3. Self-reflection is easier for introverts. This is because introverts tend to direct their energy inwardly, i.e. towards themselves rather than the outside world.

    Self-reflection leads to self-awareness which is seen as an admirable quality no matter who you're trying to impress.

    It also lets you evaluate your networking experiences to pick up on mistakes and prevent them from happening again. 

Introverts are better at reviewing details which helps them with not only networking but often times their personal brand is more polished, but often times has less content. My favorite comparison is looking an introverts business website (Example:  Pueblo Concrete Contractors) and comparing it to an extrovert's (Example:  Santa Fe Carpet Cleaning).
